What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a form of permanent reduction of hair growth.
The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis, where the laser light energy heats the target, which is the dark pigment of the hair called melanin.
The laser will only target the melanin (color), which absorbs the light energy, eventually heating the hair follicle causing enough damage to slow or prevent regrowth.
Since the laser light is absorbed by dark material in the hair, it will only cause damage to the hair follicle but not the surrounding tissues.
This is why laser hair removal only works on darker hairs, not blonde or white hair, as there is not much melanin for the laser light to absorb.
It is also essential to understand the hair growth cycle process as laser only permanently disables hairs in the anagen phase.
Following the treatment there may be slight redness and little bumps for a short time, this can be soothed by applying Laser Enzyme gel or Aloe Vera gel as many times as needed.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The laser fires a beam of light to the skin absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle. The hair follicle temperature is heated enough to destroy the hair follicle, preventing it from growing back.
The target timing for laser treatment is at the anagen hair growth phase for successful reduction of hair.
To completely understand how a laser works, there are three stages of hair growth:
How Permanent Is Laser Hair Removal?
It depends on what area of the body and what type of hair you are treating. If you have very thick, coarse hair, you can see up to 85- 90% reduction in hair growth. Someone with fine hair will only see a reduction of approximately 45- 60%. Remember, treating the face area typically requires more treatments because older females tend to grow new and denser facial hairs with hormonal changes, the natural ageing process or as a side effect of medications.
Can Laser Be Performed On The Full Body?
Laser hair removal can be done anywhere on the body and is popular on specific body parts. Both males and females get full body laser hair removal, including the genital areas.
What are the Benefits of Laser Hair Removal?
- Compared with other hair removal systems, such as waxing or shaving, laser hair removal gives you long lasting permanent hair reduction and is much cheaper in the long term.
- Laser hair removal is very convenient; you can have a treatment on your lunch break. Treatments can take as little as 15 minutes, such as underarms, bikini, or face.
- There is no down time, you can continue your daily life straight after the treatment.
- Large areas can also be treated such as Full Legs, Full Back, Chest & Abdomen at one time.
- Laser hair removal improves your skin condition and texture as the laser beam heats the lower layer of dermis and stimulates collagen production without harming the skin.
- Say goodbye to ingrown hairs and ingrown hair scars with medical grade Laser Hair Removal treatment.
- Depending on the individual, you can get up to 90% permanent hair reduction.
- A course of laser hair removal could save your valuable time. Instead of spending your time with painful waxing or irritation as a result of shaving you can use your time in much better ways.

Pre Laser Hair Removal Instructions
- The area must be cleanly shaved within 24 hours prior to the treatment. Electric razors are not recommended as the hair is typically left too long.
- SPF 30-50 must be worn on the area daily or the area has to be sufficiently covered with clothing to prevent UV exposure (Invisible Zinc is great for sensitive skin).
- Do not tweeze, wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. Only shave the area.
- The treatment area needs to be free from make-up, lotion, deodorant and sun cream- inform the practitioner before treatment starts if you require wipes.
- Avoid skin irritants a few days pre and post-treatment
- Products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents, etc.
- The area cannot be treated if it has been exposed to sun within 4 weeks prior to treatment.
- Fake tanning products CANNOT be used 3-4 weeks prior to treatment; the area should be thoroughly exfoliated to remove all residues.
Post Laser Hair Removal Instructions
- SPF 30-50 must be worn on the area daily or the area has to be sufficiently covered with thick enough clothing to prevent UV exposure.
- After the treatment, the area may be noticeably red (erythema) and may be swollen (edema) around each follicle. The area can be cooled again after the treatment to reduce the inflammation. This redness may last 2 hours up to several days after the treatment depending on the individual.
- The hair will shed after the treatment within 1-3 weeks.
- Do not tweeze, wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. Only shave the area.
- Exfoliation can be done to help the hairs shed faster (please wait a minimum of 1 week after the treatment to do this).
- Hot showers and baths are not advisable for a minimum of 48 hours after the treatment. Only a cool shower should be taken.
- Deodorant must be avoided for 12 hours, it can then be used so long as the skin is not irritated.
- Exercise is not recommended for 48 hours after the treatment as this will reheat the area and may cause discomfort.
- Itching after treatments may occur, topical hydrocortisone or Benadryl can be applied to alleviate this, or an oral antihistamine can be taken (Claritin is better for day use to prevent drowsiness).
- If you change your medication you must inform the clinic more than 48 hours prior to treatment.
- Bruising and swelling are less common but may occur and will resolve with time
- Notify clinic of any concerns (blistering, excessive redness/swelling, etc.)
- Your Practitioner will advise you on the gaps between treatments as they can vary on the area of the body and depending on the results from the previous treatment. Typically the face will be every 4 weeks and the body every 6-8 weeks.
Note: Hormones, diseases, medication or other factors can affect the treatment outcome and side effects – consult your physician. History of herpes or cold sores may require an anti-viral prescription prior to treatment. Remember to notify Nova Skin with any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment.
